What is TTIP? And six reasons why the answer should scare you

The trade negotiations are an assault on democracy. I would vote against them except… hang on a minute, I can’t.

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership is a series of trade negotiations being carried out mostly in secret between the EU and US. As a bi-lateral trade agreement, TTIP is about reducing the regulatory barriers to trade for big business, things like food safety law, environmental legislation, banking regulations and the sovereign powers of individual nations. It is, as John Hilary,Executive Director of campaign group War on Want, said: “An assault on European and US societies by transnational corporations.”

Die EU-Unterhändler versichern: TTIP und Ceta werden keine europäische Standards verwässern. Dabei wurden Umwelt- und Nahrungssicherheitsregeln längst geschwächt.

The hidden costs of trade treaties

The free trade treaties with Canada (CETA) and the United States (TTIP) are not threatening European standards, the negotiators in Brussels assure us. Yet environmental and food safety regulations have already been weakened.

TTIP will weaken European Food Standards

Specialities like Parma Cheese or Speck from Tirol are until now protected and can only be produced in their Region. If the TTIP trade agreement will happen these can possibly also be produced in he USA.

The USA are pushing to allow genetically modified food and meat from hormone treated animals (both now forbidden in the EU) into the European market.

Stop TTIP and CETA

The EU soon intends to sign two far-reaching trade agreements: one with Canada (CETA = Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement) and one with the USA (TTIP = Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership). The official line is that this will create jobs and increase economic growth. However, the beneficiaries of these agreements will be big corporations, not citizens:

Investor-State-Dispute Settlement (ISDS): Canadian and US companies would have the right to sue for damages if they believe that they have suffered losses because of government decisions (for instance new laws to protect the environment or consumer rights).

Improving or even maintaining our standards for food, labour rights, environmental protection and consumer rights will become much harder.

Liberalisation and privatisation would effectively become irreversible.

The EU and its member states would come under pressure to allow risky technologies such as fracking or genetic modification.

CETA and TTIP would increase the power of multinationals at the expense of democracy and the public. We must not allow this to happen! Please sign our European Citizens’ Initiative!
